1. Adjust the temperature and steam volume of the steam iron
Heavy fabrics usually require higher temperatures and steam volumes to be effectively ironed. First, set the steam iron to a suitable high temperature setting, such as "wool" or "cotton". Make sure there is enough water in the water tank to ensure continuous steam spray. Thick fabrics take a long time to iron, and sufficient water can avoid the trouble of frequent water addition. At the same time, turn on the high steam volume to allow the steam to penetrate deep into the fabric, which helps to remove deep wrinkles faster.
2. Use the steam function to "prime" the fabric before ironing heavy fabrics. Use the steam function to "prime" the fabric. Hold the steam iron slightly in the air, about 2-3 cm away from the fabric, and let the high-temperature steam spray evenly on the surface of the fabric to preliminarily heat it and relax the fibers. This step can soften the fabric, prepare it for subsequent ironing, and effectively reduce the indentation caused by excessive pressure.
3. Pressing ironing instead of rubbing back and forth
For thick fabrics, it is recommended to use the "pressing" method when ironing, rather than rubbing back and forth directly. Place the iron gently on the area to be ironed, press for a few seconds, then lift it up and move to the next part in turn. This pressing ironing method not only allows the steam to penetrate deeply, but also avoids pulling caused by sliding over a large area, making the fabric smoother. If the fabric is thicker, the pressing time can be appropriately extended, but be careful to avoid local overheating to prevent scalding the fabric.
4. Use ironing cloth for protection
For particularly thick fabrics such as woolen coats, you can use an ironing cloth or thin cotton cloth to cover the surface of the fabric before ironing. This method can not only prevent the iron from directly contacting the fabric and causing shine or burn marks, but also allow the steam to penetrate thick fabrics more evenly. It is recommended to choose a light and breathable cotton cloth for the ironing cloth to avoid being too thick and affecting the steam effect.
Avoid excessive pressure: Thick fabrics do not need to be pressed hard, otherwise it is easy to damage the fiber structure.
Clean the iron regularly: Steam irons may produce scale after long-term use, affecting steam output, so clean the iron regularly to ensure sufficient steam.
Choose a suitable ironing environment: When ironing heavy clothes, it is best to do it on a spacious ironing board to ensure that the clothes are fully unfolded and avoid repeated folding.
By following the above steps and precautions, you can iron heavy fabrics more easily, keep your clothes clean and smooth, and extend their life.
